When you are configuring the kernel do both Vanilla and gentoo sources have the same options and if there are differant options what exacly are they? I have a habit of making kenels that dont work to well, and I have a configuation that works well with the vanilla sources, could I just blindly use the same config file for gentoo sources? thanks for any help. |

They are not the same - gentoo sources contains quite a few patches that can enhance performance, security etc like preempt, low latency and grsecurity.
If you do an emerge gentoo-sources, the new kernel source tree will contain file called patches.txt that describes the changes. I think there's a way to get this online but I'm not sure how since half the website's options are missing for some reason at the moment.
This thread might be useful to you with kernel questions.
I believe that if you want to use your old .config file you can copy it over the gentoo-sources tree and type make oldconfig. You might still want to manually edit your options though because you may not like the defaults (it may ask you, I've never tried doing an oldconfig). |

It will ask you. Any questions that are considered "new" (i.e. there was no entry in the old .config) are prompted when you make oldconfig. _________________ For every higher wall, there is a taller ladder |

I tell the kernel to do it. The Gentoo init scripts should mount it for you if the kernel doesn't, so it should work either way. _________________ For every higher wall, there is a taller ladder |
