I have a Athlon XP 2400+ System.
I'm going to install x86 Package CD (2004.2) on it...
Is it still possible to optimize it for Athlon XP?
Or
Do I have to use Athlon XP Package CD?

What I want is well optimized fast system :)

You have to use the Athlon XP packagecd... You can optimize stuff you merge after the install, but everything you have directly after the install will not be optimized for your system.

kesara,

x86 is correct for a stage 1 on any IA32 hardware.
If you want to start with a later stage, you either have to recompile everything or accept that you didn;t get to choose the optimisations.

I mean is it possible to optimize it to my system,
By using common x86 package CD?
(If so is there any Guides or How-To on that)
Because It is the only package CD that I've got right now:)

kesara,

Yes. If you start with stage 1, you will optimise for your system as you go.

You need to choose CFLAGS depending on how hard you want the compiler to work and USE flags depending on what you want the machine to do.

I use
CFLAGS="-march=athlon-xp -O3 -fomit-frame-pointer -pipe"
If you don't have an Athlon-xp you will need to change that.

I'm going to use "Athlon XP stage 3"
So you mean that I can optimize packages like KDE & Open Office
by without using Athlon XP 2004.2 Package CD?
Thankx

kesara,

By using a stage 3, the base system is already compiled so you will not optimise that. It does not include any GUI things so you will compile them using the setting you choose.

As things get updated in the base system, they will be compiled with your optimistations too, so you will move slowly towards a stage 1.

kesara to use the package cd you have to use stage3. Go ahead and use the packages. This is the fastest way to get up and going. After you're fully installed just do a " emerge world <desktop_of_choice> mozilla ....-uDp " . The packakages on the cd are allredy 2 months or more out of date which means 75% to 95% has been updated. Depending on how fast your box is this can be ok to a major pain in the dinkss.
When you do emerge -uDp world gnome mozilla ... , put in your prefernces, you might post the list. I'll put down 10dallors (I'm cheap) that you will have at least 300 packages to update. :P
