I have a Sony DCR TRV-80E digital video camera, and it's connected to my computer through usb. However, my Gentoo box doesn't seem to recognise it. When I connect the camera to my computer, there's no single signal anywhere: no new files in /dev, no new lines in dmesg, nothing. Do I need to enable some thingamajigs in kernel or something? What have I missed?

Edit: I don't know if this should belong to kernel&hardware, but the problem may be some small, very stupid thing I've missed which has nothing to do with either kernel or my camera, so I put it in here.

Have you emerged hotplug and added it to the boot runlevel?
It should show up as a new /dev/sd* drive.
Also I think you need to enable support for hot-pluggable devices in the kernel.

I think I've done those, because my usb memory stick works like a charm. It shows up correctly as /dev/sda.

?ave you tried in the play/edit state of the camera while it's on?
For my camera (sony dcr-hc90e) only in play/edit state you can access the movies/pics.
