I'm stuck at 2.6.6-mm5 as the most recent kernel I can use, because all kernels starting with 2.6.7 cause my machine to lock up when during a compile (in and out of xorg, so that's not the issue). Anywhere from 5 minutes into a compile to I think the best was 30 minutes, the machine will hard lock, no cursor, no activity, nothing except a a static screen.

I've tried turning on and off various kernel options but to no avail. If I take my 2.6.6-mm5 config and apply it to a newer kernel (make oldconfig), and proceed to select "NO" to all the new object it still locks, so at least I know that it's not a new module, but rather a change in a previous one. Does anyone know of any significant changes fromm 2.6.6 to 2.6.7 which may be causing this?
I've just made a new gentoo install on this box, and that of course also has the same problems.

P4-2.4GHz, 512MB (64MB video shared), SiS 5513 IDE, SiS 650 video.

why don't you start from a complete new kernel configuration? a configuration, where you build the absolute minimum and then start to add options to that configuration, after you have run the kernel for at least 1 day without any problem.

cheers

Yeah, once KDE 3.3 finishes I'll try working through it. I was hoping someone might have some insight into some likely culprits. My kernel is currently built with only necessary stuff. If I don't use it, I don't build it. I don't use 4k stacks and I don't use reiser4, I've also disabled ACPI/APM and framebuffer. Oh well, one KDE finishes I'll start going through it again.
