i have a canon bjc 6200 s on my parallel port.
what do i have to activate in my kernel to make gen2 detect it?
i2c? (what is that anyway?) _________________ WEBSITE

You probably just need to look into the kernel "parallel port" options, and add printer support in the "character devices" section. This is all from memory.
I2C is for hardware sensors. _________________ C is for Cookies! |

gen2 doesn't just detect it, you need a tool for that. Not much kernel tweaking required (parallel port of course), you should install / configure cups or other printing package.
Ps: judging from your post you might consider mandrake first, and maybe if everything works you can recreate it with gentoo (copy configuration etc)
