please bear in mind i am completly new to linux and dont have a clue what im doing 
im trying to boot from a liveCD, but it seems to have difficulty finding my hard drive at first. after about 10 minuits it sucsesfully boots, but still cant see anything when i try an #fdisk
ive got m$ on a seperate partition, so i know my disk isnt screwed, so why cant linux see it?

In that case, please be prepared to read - a lot.
Don't just read about Gentoo, read everything related to getting started in Linux you can find.

What kind of disk is it - SCSI ? SATA ?
Try booting it with
Which will also work for SATA drives IIUC.

If you have the bandwidth (to download another CD image), you might consider using Knoppix to see if the problem persists with those bootable CDs.
