Before you flame me, and you know who you are, let me apologize. I was not sure where to put this as it has to do with both a grfx card and X.
Here is the thing, I was running SuSE with a geforce mx 420 card. It worked swimingly untill I 'upgraded' to xorg 6.7 (they use xfree 4.3.x-rcx, or something like it). I then lost my bootsplash and the framebuffer kept asking (it looked like someone put vga=ask as a kernel argument). I downgraded to xfree again and it ran fine, albeit slow.
Now I am a gamer. A broke gamer. When I saved up enough dough I got an XFX GeForceFX 5200 256M. It is a HUGE improvement!! It works dandy in winxp.
But, despite the killer opengl spport (maybe not killer, but better than the mx), I still get the framebuffer problem. The same problem, it works with xfree but not xorg. But the actual X runs fine, it is just the framebuffer (vesafb).
Thinking it was a SuSE thing, I ditched it and switched to gentoo. I got the same problem though. I cannot figur it out and I'm starting to twitch.
So, does anyone know what is going on? The only solution I can come up with will be to revert back to xfree (I don't even like to say it). But, does that also mean I need to do the 10+ hour recompile of kde, gnome, and such? And do not try to pursuade me with pkgs, they are not an option.
By the way I have:
2.24G penium 4
512M DDR
asus p4s533 mobo
and XFX GeforceFX 5200 256M
I also have the nvidia driver in and i am using the xorg.conf stufff they recomend. GL and X work swimmingly. |
