On a Sparc64...how long should it take
Code:
# emerge kde
to finish? (Sorry if this should be in a different forum area, I posted it in both Sparc and Desktop Env.)

anyhow, it's going on 48 hours since I started it. non-sparc feedback would be cool too, just curious how long it takes folks.

thanks. -rob.

There's no way anyone can give you a ballpark number as it can flutuate wildly depending on your USE and CFLAGS as well as your processor, RAM, etc.. I'm in the middle of it myself. I'm on a PII 400mhz and it usually takes me about 24-36 hours.

Took 15 hours on my old Athon Thunderbird 900Mhz. I used the command: "emerge --usepkg kde" Not sure if that makes it any faster.

On my 2.4GHz P4 w/ 1.25GB RAM, it takes about 60 minutes to compile kdelibs and about 75 minutes to compile kdebase. I wouldn't know how long 'emerge kde' takes because I always install KDE manually (since I only want a couple of apps from each package).

Yep kinda the same here:
Athlon XP 1800+ with 256 mb took about 5 hours for emerging KDE base

the --usepkg (or -k for short) flag simply asks portage to use a binary package (a .tar.bz2 file) if one's available, rather than compiling the package from scratch. unless you built one yourself or you're doing a fresh install from a livecd, one won't be available.

To sum it up:

sven@clawhammer sven $ X=0 &&for i in `cat mins` ;do X=`expr $X + $i` ;done &&echo $X

sven@clawhammer sven $ expr 320 / 60
5
sven@clawhammer sven $ expr 320 % 60
20
That of course leaves out the seconds.
EDIT: Oh, plus another 28 minutes for qt-3.3.3 :)
