Hello
I have recently finished getting a rather nice desktop environment starting from Gentoo Stage 1, however I have encountered a moderate annoyance- my scroll wheel doesn't work. The mouse is a PS2 Logitech 2 button mouse with a wheel in the middle. When searching the forums for a fix, it seems I need to edit my /etc/X11/xorg.conf... however, I do not have one. Thus is the problem... and I'm sure its an easy fix... could someone help me out? Thanks! |

Your X is working fine otherwise? Okay, do you have a /etc/X11/XF86Config or /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 ? If so, edit that instead. If not, what files are in your /etc/X11 directory? |

Yes, other than the scroll wheel, my X11 works fine. I do not have XF86. When I do ls on /etc/X11, I getSessions chooser.sh proxymngr twm xinit xorg.conf.example
X fs rstart wmconfig xkb xserver
app-defaults lbxproxy startDM.sh xdm xloadimagerc xsm

Have you saved it as /etc/xorg.conf, perhaps? |

When you emerge Xorg, it doesn't have one by default. The easiest way is probably to run xorgcfg which should automatically detect a basic config for you. This will prompt you to save xorg.conf when you're done.
Or alternatively copy the /etc/X11/xorg.conf.example to /etc/X11/xorg.conf.
If X is working okay already, it may have created one elsewhere - possibly ~/xorg.conf or something along those lines. /var/log/Xorg.0.log should tell you what config file it's using. |

Many thanks. I hope running the configuration does not mess up how its running now because aside from the mouse issue, its perfect. |

If you're worried, try to find the file it's using at the moment and back it up somewhere. It shouldn't break too badly, if it does it's not normally that tricky to fix.
Good luck |

I'm pretty sure that xorg will fall back on built in default values if it doesn't detect an xorg.conf, so there may not be a config file anywhere. |

Even better.... if it's running mostly nicely with the defaults it can't be all bad. Wish mine did that well! |
