I want to emerge xfree instead of xorg. I put in my make.conf USE="-X x" shouldn't that allow only xfree to be installed on my system? When I do
emerge blackbox -p
emerge kde -p

it shows x11-base/xorg-x11

what do I need to do so only xfree is installed?

try
Code:

echo "x11-base/xorg-x11" >> /etc/portage/package.mask

the X-USE-flag just enables or disables general X-support in several packages.

I think neonknight misunderstood. His tip would lead to having xorg installed.

Try 'emerge -vp /usr/portage/x11-base/xfree/xfree-4.3.0-r7.ebuild' or change the version to suit your needs.

You may need to add an entry in an /etc/portage/ file to unmask xfree.

xfree is being deprecated on Gentoo... do you have a specific need for it?

I just emerged a new system on new hardware with xorg. I installed my nvidia drivers via the installer that nvidia offers. I made the correct changes to my xorg.conf: uncommnted load glx and made sure dri was commented, and changed driver to nvidia. Glxinfo was showing that I was not getting direct-rendering. On an impulse I unmerged xorg , and emerged xfree. afer running xf86config, no other changes being made(other then the normal ones to XF86Config, as mentioned above) My glxinfo was showing dierct rendering and my fps were faster by a factor of 10. This also busted my system.

I am not sure if this problem is related to xorg, but when I run tuxracer, the screen is all distorted, about one inch of black screen on both sides and it is stretch tall.
