Yesterday I have started Gentoo installation again. I am 99% sure to switch from my old distribution, which was fine for servers, but not suitable for daily use.

Installation went fine, withouth problems. Unfortunately after booting, showing few messages from kernel (it is showing quite fast, but I think latest is something about PS?), screen goes almost completly black. I can see cursors in top line of screen (but it has thickness of about 1 pixel). When i try typing somethin it moves, but shows nothing. Also HDD is working, so I assume it is display specific problem. I tried gentoo-dev-sources with "fbcon" in USE and without it. Didn't help. Also not using initrd doesn't help.

My configuration is Gericom laptop with Radeon 9000 Mobility and using builtin LCD.

Any ideas? Thank you!

I am not using vga= option when booting. Now I tried and using 80x25 mode still same thing happens. BTW: last thing it shows is about "serio".

Tried 2.4.x kernel from gentoo-sources and it works fine, but still no idea what to do with gentoo-dev-sources.

assuming the system is working and it is a display issue try logging in blindly and doing a :
Code:

dmesg > ~/dmesg.log

and then see if anything's odd...

mybe post it here to get some more feedback

Well you could always try the vanilla 2.6 sources.

Did two things:

- genkernel --menuconfig all and disabling all unneeded stuff and it went trough (next thing i will check only disabling framebuffer)
- SSH on that machine and checking dmesg, nothing unusual, but see for yourself (the only thing interesting -vesafb: mode switch failed (eax: 0x2f004f) which is close to "serio", maybe I have VESA broken?) :

Should I consider it hardware or gentoo bug?

I am asking because I don't know if I should fill bug report on bugs.gentoo.org.

BTW: When I use genkernel --menuconfig all and then upgrade kernel, will it keep my settings or I need to use --menuconfig again and load it manually?

I have had the exact same problem.
If you comment out the splash image line. It should work in complete txt mode.
Worked for me.
