After folowing the installation guide (and using genkernel, together with the grub.conf that goes with it) I rebooted and the gentoo grub screen came up (that kind of purple thing).

So I select the only kernel in the list and the system runs through some stuff before coming up with

"attempt to access beyond end of device"

a load of times then presenting me with a shell.

I guess I must have copied down the grub.conf file wrong. Is there any way of retrieving it without starting again?

That probably means you missed the 'ramdisk=8192' option in your grub.conf.

If you do get a working prompt, you can do:

Code:

mount /boot
nano -w /boot/grub/grub.conf

And fix it. If not, you can boot from the LiveCD and mount your boot partition like you did in the installation.
