I downloaded packages-athlon-xp-2004.2.iso

I don't find any guidance on that disk or in the Gentoo Handbook on how it is recommended to use the GRP. Is it intended that most users should simply do
# emerge All/*

About how much disk space would that require?

Otherwise, it seems like it would take many hours to pick & choose individual packages to install, particularly since I'm not familiar with many (or most) of them.

i recommend installing all of the packages. thus being, you will have a plethora of new apps and builds to learn from. after testing and playing around with them you will more than likely come to the conclusion that u left windows for fluxbox/openbox/or any of the 'boxes' and get rid of the majority of packages. but it is informative and fun and quite an experience trying the different packages and apps.

I have no shame in trying to lure you to fluxbox
