I recently my hands on a 56k dial modem and decided to try and see if I could set my PC up as a phone, using my microphone and speakers. I don't mean a SIP phone, but a landline telephone. Unfortunately, I can't find any software for Linux that will allow me to do this.
I would like to know if anyone knows of a program that can do this.

Thanks in advance.

I think to do this you need a special "voice modem"
Under windows this would show up as a seperate device to the actual modem (under soundcards) You would have to find a modem with a linux compatible sound system.

Not true, you can recieved calls and faxes through your modem, and dial-out, under windows under a great program I know called.... well I forgot but I've seen it running =P Will post the name soon. In any case, this stuff should be available under linux - I'm trying to find it myself, which is what lead me to this thread. Anyone know of software that even half replicates this?

my point is this exactly, under windows you have a voice modem which allows you to send audio over the modem.
This relies on windows drivers.
There are several linux packages that use the telephony system in the kernel. However I doubt there is anything that can use the voice part of an internal modem. You most likely need some sort of IVR card. Check out asterisk
