Just saw this on slashdot and it's impressive, no special voodo needed, just your normal java vm with your browser.
Some info and links

A fast mirror here that has the video steam via java.

There was a guy working but he moved the stuffed animals, danced with tux, then moved the camera onto the xmms screen and then lights went out.
I'm playing the stream in Kaffeine now, but it worked fine in Konqueror. |

I suppose that it's okay, but unless the guy is there doing something funny, then it's not worth the low-quality sound. |

It's not about the content, it's about the way the content is being delivered.
And yes java can be moo if 1998 keeps calling wanting their computer back.
For me, java takes a little bit of recources when an applet loads but after that I don't notice any performance hits. I routinely have multiple pages open with applets running that show different weather animations. |

I'm really not too sure how this is any different or more special than internet radio other than the web cam and low-quality sound. I suppose it just doesn't flatter me a lot but it would be funny to see some guy dancing with Tux. |

Normal streaming radio or video require you to have a codec specific plugin for your browser (like mplayer-plugin) or you use something by itself like mplayer, kaffeine, amarok, wmp, quicktime, etc. What this is doing it wrapping the Theora codec into a java applet that has a video player. Basicly it downloads the applet which is a mini player with the specific codec for the stream. This isn't something new but it is a little more advanced and it is using an open source video codec.
I'm sorry this isn't a non technical thing in Gentoo Chat. |
