I upgraded openswan, and now I get

"pfkey write failed, returning -1 with errno=22" followed by "Invalid argument" when starting ipsec.

According to various mailing lists, this is caused by a version mismatch.

When I do an "ipsec --version", I get:

Linux Openswan U2.1.4/Ksuper-freeswan-1.99.8 (kips)

Apparantly these version numbers need to be the same. Yet, when I unmerge openswan, and do a make menuconfig on a NEW kernel, I've still got IPSEC kernel module option - presumably the incorrect verson.

Re-emerging openswan doesn't seem to update the kernel ipsec module to the correct version.

How do I update the ipsec kernel module to match the userland utilities?

I actually can't update the kernel because I can't boot that machine, but discovered tha OpenSwan 1.0.7 has a compatible module. It is updated fairly often also, so it should be a workable solution. Config files are somehow different, but nothing extremely weird or difficult.
