Mozilla Firefox 1.0 PR release candidate

It appears that the Gentoo people have updated the mozilla eclass so that Mozilla Firefox 1.0_pre builds correctly, with "search as you type", a.k.a. "type-ahead find" working properly.

Note that you may still have to delete compreg.dat from .mozilla/firefox/default.???/ for Firefox to work properly...

Hmm.... I switched from 0.9.3 to 1.0-rc2 without problems. However, I used the official build from Mozilla.org.

I tried the official binary release, but for some reason it would segfault as soon as I started it. Don't think its a hardware problem...

Bookmark problem is still present - even in binary release. First off, when I right-click on the bookmark toolbar the 'new folder' option is greyed out (as well as new bookmark and new separator). Tried nuking my .mozilla directory and starting from scratch, same deal. Can anyone confirm that the bookmark toolbar is working fine? Can you still drag bookmarks from one folder to another? How about moving a folder into another? This issue is suspicious to me, because the Windows binaries work the same as they used to.

Does anyone know how to turn off tooltips? And less important, that drop-down box that appears when I start typing in a location?

To disable tooltips:
set browser.chrome.toolbar_tips to false

To disable the dropdown:
Err, I forgot this one :)

To filter the autocomplete results to match only what you typed:
set browser.urlbar.matchOnlyTyped to true

To enable autocomplete autofill (useful if you still want autocomplete without the dropdown):
set browser.urlbar.autoFill to true

Anyone tried bookmarking RSS Feeds to create live bookmarks? That's pretty cool. Go to a site like Slashdot, check the bottom right corner for the RSS icon, clickit and then add some live bookmarks. Pretty funky.

in previous versions, this command cleared those fields, a very nice feature.

but now, all this stupid text opens in a small heterosexually challanged window, like for this page:

Well it's not really a bug - ctrl-u seems to be the shortcut for view source now. I guess they changed it from whatever it was before.
And some people do want to see HTML source - web developers would spring to mind, or anyone who knows some HTML and wants to see how something's done in a site.

The profile thing only hits me when I try to start another instance of Firefox before the first one has loaded fully. Once it's open it'll just open a new window, but it seems it gets confused before then.

To get ctrl+u to clear a field's content you need to set your gtk2 key-theme to "Emacs".

use gtk-key-theme-name = "Emacs" in your gtkrc or set the appropriate gconf key if you are using gnome (or, even better, use the keyboard thingie that comes with gnome), and voila!

This is actually a bugfix, not a removed feature: firefox tries to integrate the best it can into the gnome environnement :)

I am not using gnome, I run openbox3, and I have kept this install very very clean (I use it in a sys admins course), and I do not want to install such a heavy thing as gnome, my backup will become too big.

any other tip?

hm, maybe I should RTFM on firefox, perhaps there is another combo of keys that does that sweet magic...
