Can someone please put type-ahead search back onto this thing?

See my post above with the solution!

Basically, what you have to do is remove "typeaheadfind" from the "myext=" line in /usr/portage/eclass/mozilla.eclass, then re-emerge mozilla-firefox, then remove compreg.dat from ~/.mozilla/firefox/default.???/

It works for me!

what exactly do you mean by "typeaheadfind" ?
Is it the "Find as you type" feature?! That worked out of the box for me

It appears that the Gentoo people have updated the mozilla eclass so that Mozilla Firefox 1.0_pre builds correctly, with "search as you type", a.k.a. "type-ahead find" working properly.

Note that you may still have to delete compreg.dat from .mozilla/firefox/default.???/ for Firefox to work properly...

Bookmarking is still messed up. I can't drag bookmarks from the Bookmark Toolbar at all..

Hmm.... I switched from 0.9.3 to 1.0-rc2 without problems. However, I used the official build from Mozilla.org.

I tried the official binary release, but for some reason it would segfault as soon as I started it. Don't think its a hardware problem...

Bookmark problem is still present - even in binary release. First off, when I right-click on the bookmark toolbar the 'new folder' option is greyed out (as well as new bookmark and new separator). Tried nuking my .mozilla directory and starting from scratch, same deal. Can anyone confirm that the bookmark toolbar is working fine? Can you still drag bookmarks from one folder to another? How about moving a folder into another? This issue is suspicious to me, because the Windows binaries work the same as they used to.

They aren't greyed out for me. My only complaint is that when you use the bookmark manager everything is in alphabetical order but there is no option that I can find to have them be alphabetical in the bookmark drop down box.

Are you using the binary release?

The only way I've ever moved things around with mozilla or firefox is to go into the bookmark manager and make changes that way. I can't check to see if I can do it any other way right now as my system messed up early this morning while I was recompiling the latest version of firefox. I've booted into Knoppix right now while my system is doing an "emerge -e world." It will probably be about 3-4 days with my system before Gentoo will be back up.

Does anyone know how to turn off tooltips? And less important, that drop-down box that appears when I start typing in a location?

To disable tooltips:
set browser.chrome.toolbar_tips to false

To disable the dropdown:
Err, I forgot this one :)

To filter the autocomplete results to match only what you typed:
set browser.urlbar.matchOnlyTyped to true

To enable autocomplete autofill (useful if you still want autocomplete without the dropdown):
set browser.urlbar.autoFill to true

Anyone tried bookmarking RSS Feeds to create live bookmarks? That's pretty cool. Go to a site like Slashdot, check the bottom right corner for the RSS icon, clickit and then add some live bookmarks. Pretty funky.

This happened for me until I switched to the -r2 ebuild; that seems to have fixed it. Also the searchbar is still working, and I can now see my extensions in the extension manager again.

BUT!

Now I have a brand new problem ... I can't change themes. That is, I can see the themes in the theme manager, and I can click on one, and I can click on "use theme", and it will say "restart firefox to use", but restarting firefox has no effect. Can't find any further info on this either here or on the Mozilla fora. Anyone have any ideas about this? Is there a Bugzilla bug (either Gentoo or Mozilla) I can jump in?

using net-www/mozilla-firefox-1.0_pre-r2

anyone tried pressing ctrl^u in the adress field or in the google search ?

in previous versions, this command cleared those fields, a very nice feature.

but now, all this stupid text opens in a small heterosexually challanged window, like for this page:

Code:

<!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.01 Transitional//EN">
<html dir="ltr">
<head>
<meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html">
<meta http-equiv="Content-Style-Type" content="text/css">

<title>Gentoo Forums :: Post a reply</title>
<link rel="stylesheet" href="templates/gentoo/gentoo.css" type="text/css">
<style type="text/css">
/* Import the fancy styles for IE only (NS4.x doesn't use the @import function) */
@import url("templates/gentoo/formIE.css");
</style>
<script language="Javascript" type="text/javascript">
<!--
   if ( 0 )
   {
      window.open('privmsg.php?mode=newpm', '_phpbbprivmsg', 'HEIGHT=225,resizable=yes,WIDTH=400');;
   }
//-->
</script>
</head>
<body bgcolor="#E5E5E5" text="#000000" link="#006699" vlink="#5493B4">

<a name="top"></a>
<form action="search.php?mode=results" method="POST" id=form1 name=fo. ...    etc etc for many pages ahead

this also steals focus from my firefox window until closed.

mm, about profiles, this is the absolutley worst thing about firefox, I really do hate when I start the browser and a snotty little window opens telling me that the profile is in use, what the fsck is that all about????

that I do find annoying sence profiles on my computer are controlled at the operating system level ... but I guess it's a left over from windows broken user controll sence multiple people used the same user on windows firefox/mozilla/netscape set up the profile wizard so that each user could have there own settings even when useing the same username in the operating system [a bad fix for a bad problem]

mhm, microsoft are to blame, again :roll:

and, I do like that ctrl^u bug better, and the behavior is the same in an old old netscape browser I have on my sun ultra machine, so the bug must have been there for a long time, and evolved into a feature, like a Mitochondria :)

I mean, why do you want to se the html coding?

to a regular user like me, a keypress to clear the fields is much more usable, especially since marking text is = to copying text in linux...

anyway, thankyou for your fast reply

Well it's not really a bug - ctrl-u seems to be the shortcut for view source now. I guess they changed it from whatever it was before.
And some people do want to see HTML source - web developers would spring to mind, or anyone who knows some HTML and wants to see how something's done in a site.

The profile thing only hits me when I try to start another instance of Firefox before the first one has loaded fully. Once it's open it'll just open a new window, but it seems it gets confused before then.

To get ctrl+u to clear a field's content you need to set your gtk2 key-theme to "Emacs".

use gtk-key-theme-name = "Emacs" in your gtkrc or set the appropriate gconf key if you are using gnome (or, even better, use the keyboard thingie that comes with gnome), and voila!

This is actually a bugfix, not a removed feature: firefox tries to integrate the best it can into the gnome environnement :)

dioxmat

I am not using gnome, I run openbox3, and I have kept this install very very clean (I use it in a sys admins course), and I do not want to install such a heavy thing as gnome, my backup will become too big.

any other tip?

hm, maybe I should RTFM on firefox, perhaps there is another combo of keys that does that sweet magic...

did you fully read my post ?
Quote:

use gtk-key-theme-name = "Emacs" in your gtkrc

For instance, my .gtkrc-2.0 looks like this:
Code:

# -- THEME AUTO-WRITTEN DO NOT EDIT
include "/home/mat/.themes/FallWithMe/gtk-2.0/gtkrc"

style "user-font" {
        font_name = "Sans 11"
}

widget_class "*" style "user-font"

gtk-font-name="Sans 11"

include "/home/mat/.gtkrc.mine"

# -- THEME AUTO-WRITTEN DO NOT EDIT

all the magic is done in .gtkrc,mine :
Code:

gtk-key-theme-name = "Emacs"
gtk-can-change-accels = 1

I just mentionned the gconf/gnome solution because it's the way things should be done if you are using gnome.
