I've just emerged udev-032 and disabled the tar option in /etc/conf.d/rc, working so far ...

I think it's an init script bug. Or xdm itself.

probably, i mean i think tha same, but gdm works on my machine. does it on yours? is kdm just an xdm's add-on? and one guy from polish linux forum claims that xdm works ok on his machine...

anyways, on september 13th we had this uptate to udev
Quote:
-files/udev-015-no-wait-for-sleep.patch,
-files/udev-016-logging-config-option.patch,
-files/udev-017-no-wait-for-sleep.patch,
-files/udev-018-sysfs-build-fix.patch,
-files/udev-019-unlink-existing.patch:
deleted a lot of old patches from the tree

"no-wait-for-sleep.patch" apears to be linked with some timing issues. but i'm not a coder to investigate this

and we might have a bingo, hope so.
we have these updates to xorg-x11 6.8.0 arround september 12th:
Quote:

14 Sep 2004; Donnie Berkholz <spyderous@gentoo.org>; xorg-x11-6.8.0.ebuild:
FILES_VER 0.2. Support any future display managers (#23957) and update MANPATH
(#63645).

14 Sep 2004; Stephen P. Becker <geoman@gentoo.org> xorg-x11-6.8.0.ebuild:
Added -mtune to ALLOWED_FLAGS for mips.

12 Sep 2004; Daniel Goller <morfic@gentoo.org> xorg-x11-6.8.0.ebuild:
ppend -mno-sse2 with gcc3.4 for bug #57602

so, i hope this would bring us some help.
more is here http://mirrors.kems.net/mirrors/gentoo/gentoo-portage/x11-base/xorg-x11/ChangeLog

Still looks good. Got back to xorg 6.8.0-r1, still okay. I guess I've done 10 reboots now, always kdm has come up.

I still suspect some timing issue, though, and probabally different "fixes" will work for different machines.

i'll try it later on, but it's still not a conclusion just another workaround... you see, the guy from polish forum i mentioned above uses devfs not the udev, as one guy from here [sorry dude, i can't recall your nick]... so i doubt it's an udev issue... well, not only.

Sounds like a different problem to the one I had - my xdm just never came up at all, 7 out of 10 times.

Yes, ps/2 mouse and keyboard. This is why I was wondering if the tar'ing up of /dev was somehow getting in the way.

No. I don't have gdm installed. I wouldn't say kdm is an xdm add-on as xdm is completely autonomous. When you set DISPLAYMANAGER to kdm/gdm, that's when the login manager acts like an addon...

So really. Everyone having kdm/gdm issues.. What about when you set DISPLAYMANAGER to xdm? Same issue for me...

I'm really going to vote with a bug of some sort. With what? Hmm. Good question. I'm going to have to say it's a bug with xdm.

Someone suggested a timing issue. Perhaps we should compare hardware/software? Because I do have the same version of xorg-x11 on my server and that works without issues.....

I have:
asus A7N8X Deluxe
AMD XP 2200+
eGeForce 5200 FX
2.6.8.1-ck8 (I've tried mm/dev/gentoo/official kernel from kernel.org)
xorg-x11-6.8.0-r1
udev

Code:
epitaph dracco # emerge info
Portage 2.0.51_rc7 (default-x86-1.4, gcc-3.4.2, glibc-2.3.4.20040808-r0, 2.6.8.1-ck8 i686)

NOTE: I have tried less optimized CFLAGS with CFLAGS="-march=athlon-xp -O3 -pipe -fomit-frame-pointer" so I know I'm not over optimizing xorg nor kdebase. To be honest, I can't remember exactly when this issue started. But it's been well over a week.

Hi,

I think it's an issue with the start of the x server within kdm.
Remember the logfiles at the beginning of this thread.
KDM reports a "[kdm] X server startup timeout, terminating".

I don't know if there is some kind of cooperation
between xdm and kdm. Does kdm invoke xdm? Perhaps
both suffer from the same problem: They try to start "their"
x-server, and fail. Then we should investigate why and
where (in the source) kdm fails. Remember kdm_config,
which runs forever. Perhaps it calls xdm/startx/whatever
to start X, and waits endlessly? Remember the fact that
some people could influence kdm while moving their mouse.
This really does look like an issue with the X-Server.

Another story:
My box that sufferes from this bug was build up from
scratch as a stable system (x86). All I took from testing
was Xorg-6.8. First some data:
AMD Athlon XP 3000+, Nvidia FX5700, 512MB RAM. Udev+
devfs.

A friend of mine "renewed" his gentoo install on his laptop
(was "testing" before, and we were afraid that the freshly unmasked
gcc3.4 (~ this day the bug appeared here) could result in a mess).
He copied my system 1:1 using tar. His laptop:
Acer aspire 1500, ATI9600, AMD64 3200+.
He had this bug too! We downgraded to xorg-6.7, and
the bug was never triggered again. But this did not work
on my system.

My main PC is nearly identical in the mean of installed software
and use flags. It had _never_ this bug! It is a dual Athlon MP
2100+, GF 4TI4600, 512MB RAM. "X86", XOrg-6.8, udev-devfs.

Depending on the boot, I, too, can invoke kdm by entering just my username then enter... Sometimes it even invokes itself (after a few seconds delay). Sometimes it doesn't invoke at all. So my issue is not a "kdm never loads". I have never been able to invoke it with my mouse.

Also.. I need to add... when xdm fails and I log into console and launch xdm, it doesn't load kdm rather it loads xdm's default. Display manager is set to kdm in rc.conf.. The weird part is when xdm is invoked as above (first paragraph), it loads kdm.

ok, than last shot [for today]. how many of you suffer from this on a system compiled under Athlon XP?
it's maybe stupied, but it's just a thought...
