Hi, hope someone will be able to help me.

I'm dualbooting XP and gentoo-2.6.7-r11 kernel on my laptop (Acer Travelmate 800). However since i've recompiled the kernel and changed my grub.conf settings, when i start up the computer it is completely black-no text, no grub menu, no password input to load computer. I know that everything is still working though, as i can (blind) put in the password and load XP, which doesn;t show the XP loading prompt, but does give graphics when i get to the XP login screen. However for both the original and new kernels it remains blank even after it is fully loaded (X is not yet configured, so would just load to a text prompt).

It always originally use to load, prior to recompilation of the kernel, and could see grub screen etc. Now, i can't even boot the livecd as i can't see the screen once it has loaded. I've also tried to view my bios settings, but again the screen is black, so they're not very useful.

Possibly related is the fact that whilst trying to configure X.org earlier, i installed the synaptics driver for my internal mouse, and since then the mouse won't respond in windows. However, i haven't yet got X to work as the mouse isn't detected properly or something to that end, but that is really a different matter.

As close as possible, these are my partition tables/grub.conf:
Code:
/dev/hda1   20gb    fat32 (bootable)
/dev/hda2   32mb    ext2
/dev/hda3   512mb   swap
/dev/hda4   17gb    ext3

Code:
#grub.conf
timeout 5
default 0
splash (hd0,1)/grub/splashimage.xpm.gz #roughly

title=XP
rootnoverify (hd0,0)
makeactive
chainloader +1

title=linx new
root (hd0,1)
kernel /boot/2.6.7-gentoo-r11.01 #real_root + other options
initrd                                      #unsure

title=linux old #worked before kernel recompile
root (hd0,1)
kernel /boot/2.6.7-gentoo-r11 #real_root + other options
initrd                                      #unsure

My laptop has the following specs:
Code:
CPU: Intel Pentium-M 1600 MHz
Memory: 512 MB DDR-RAM
Graphics: ATI Radeon 9000 Mobility (64 MB) with VGA-Out / S-Video-Out
Harddrive: 40 GB

[/code]

It should be noted though that i do thing that kernels load, as have been able to (again, blind) login and issue
Code:
shutdown -h now

and everything has closed down.

Hope that someone can help me, i've searched google and the forums but can;t find anything of any great help in this particular matters.

Thanks,
drb43

sorry for all the changes to this thread but, this morning loaded everything up and worked perfectly. Decided to try my new kernel out, but that didn't boot proerly at all. The error was along the lines of can't mount fs on RAM0.

Since then it has been the same as before - all symptons are the same as in my original post except that my touchpad now works within XP.

To answer your question, i'm just using my laptop monitor for the display, there are no external monitors involved.

Thanks,
drb43
