I'm pretty much a newbie, but I spent the last twelve hours getting direct rendering to work with my RADEON IGP 320M.
I followed the directions posted by pens, "For those wondering, I got my IGP 340m up and running perfectly with the xorg-x11 server and DRI from cvs. It was very quick and painless. First off, install the xorg-x11 server (search forums for tips/guides on this), then install dri from cvs using dri.sourceforge.net/cgi-bin/moin.cgi/Building. Make sure to follow the instructions to install under X.org rather than XFree86. Good luck"
Many posts have reported low fps when running glxgears. I also have fps in the 200 range when running glxgears and direct rendering is definitely working now. However, while I was running glxgears, xscreensaver kicked in. When I moved the mouse to view the screen again, I saw fps in the 4500 - 5000 range!
Perhaps glxgears alone is not indicative of the capabilities of the card?
In any case, I'll assume the card is working the way it should.
By the way, I had redhat on my machine for a while. It was the only distro I knew. Finally decided to scrap it and try NetBSD. Crappy support for java. Tried Debian. All the packaged software was kind of old.
Then I stumbled on Gentoo. I love it. I feel like Larry the Cow! All the latest releases. No problems with hardware. Slick and easy install. Can't beat emerge. I'm sure I'll stick with Gentoo from now on! |

If glxgears is minimized or hidden ... it gets rediculous speed.
example :
Code: | 74023 frames in 5.0 seconds = 14804.600 FPS
73626 frames in 5.0 seconds = 14725.200 FPS
|
My normal speed is about 9750 (nvidia 5900xt @1280x1024)
So judging speed while glxgears is hidden is not a good indicator.... _________________ "You can lead a horticulture but you can't make her think" ~ Dorothy Parker

I believe I'm running that card in my laptop. It's still running the stock software (Windows XP Home Edition) so I haven't tried to get the card working in Linux. I'm a bit hesitant to try Linux on it because I'm not sure of all the hardware, and my sister uses it to chat to her friends sometimes. I guess it's time for her to take a crash-course in Gentoo |
