|
|
hi,
meanwhile i have setup 2 systems with gentoo succesfully, but shakeing my head with this problem
i have setup a new machine from scratch. unfortunately i just have an older NIC laying around. the chip says "PNIC 100" and the card was running fine using an older SuSE 7.3 (ya, time to update, so why not using gentoo )
i am able to modprobe the tulip driver fine.
it shows up running "lsmod".
"ifconfig eth0" gives no IP using DHCP
manual ifconfig works, but i am only able to ping localhost.
if i plugin my realtek and modprobe the 8139too everything works fine, so i assume the rest of the environment is OK
someone around with the same card who might have an idea? the card was bought a few years ago at a wellknown store in germany called "Atelco", so maybe someone has the same card.
btw: i do not get the card to work from the livecd either (2004.2). i am that far that i installed the complete base system from CD, but now its time to "emerge sync" |

If the LiveCD fails to detect & activate the card then the chipset may not have a kernel module...
Have you tried Googling for the NIC and a linux driver ? _________________ >>> emerge (3 of 7) mcse/70-293 to /

(dont get confused about the 3com - there are 2 cards in the machine).
if i look at modules.conf of SuSE i see nothing special:
alias eth1 tulip |

Can you post the output of ifconfig after you've given the card an IP address ? _________________ >>> emerge (3 of 7) mcse/70-293 to /

unfortunately i cant post a screencopy because i have no net
hmm.. ifconfig does not look unusual. i can even ping myself and tulip driver is loaded. also "route" lists the correct default gateway.
btw: in my dhcp router i meanwhile even entered the MAC of the tulip NIC, and still no go. |

i will try this one later this day - maybe it already helps others here:
http://www.clagi.de/home/tulip-patches/82c168_tulip.html
the text mentions 80c168, while the URL mentions 82c168. i myself own a 82c168 and will report later if it worked for me.
btw: "They are sent to Donald Becker in May 1998 but he hasn't included them into the driver until now."

tulip drivers have always been problematic for me with the 2.4.X kernel series. It came to a point where I used the module from the original author instead (Donald Becker) which were included in the kernel sources up until the 2.2.X series. If you want, you can try his driver which are still available and work great. here is the link:
