ho emerso firefox-bin per fretta ma poi l'ho tolto in favore di firefox compilato da me, ma nonostante questo i binario del bin è sempre li...
E con top vedo che viene pure caricato in memoria
al posto di firefox normale...

Con top e' normale che vedi caricato firefox-bin in /usr/bin invece e' strano che ci sia ancora. Controlla che non sia un link

i link simbolici sono delle brutte bestie, spesso ci ho avuto a che fare (es installazione di open group ware quando l'ebuilt non esisteva) un macello 
 ora l'ebuild c'è !!!
