I am looking for a pci network card that does not clog the PCI bus and the CPU to do work that can be done on the NIC.

100 base-t but if there is a gigabit card that is not that much more I might consider it.

thanks

Well, there is no card which does not clog the PCI bus, since that's the only mode of communication. This is especially true of the gigabit cards since they are operating right near the theoretical 133MBps speed of the 32 bit PCI bus. This is why many good GigE cards are 64 bit.

10/100 NICs are not nearly as bad.

As far as CPU goes

GigE, Intel makes shweet shevrer cards (you want the best right? ) - $100 This one I use in my desktop despite it being a "Server" card (don't ask LOL, it was free)

GigE, Another Intel - I actually use this one in 4 LAN servers at work despite it being the "Desktop" NIC - $40ish, overall the best value IMHO

10/100, 3Com is not bad either. $30ish

good luck!

I prefer 3COM 3c905C-TX-M cards for my production servers.

thanks you both for your help.
I am greatful for the input.

I always figured that the $5 dollar card that has one little chip on it wasn't the best for high end servers
