i just switched from devfs to udev. i'm running kernel 2.6.7, the latest nvidia drivers in portage (i think those are the latest in general), and the 6.8 release of xorg that just came out.
now when i installed udev, i logged in as normal and typed startx to bring up fluxbox. the nvidia splash comes up but then the screen goes black and the only way to get out of it is to hit the reset button on my tower.
i remerged the nvidia drivers. what else could eb causing this?

Are you loading the nvidia module on startup?
check /etc/modules.autoload to see if nvidia is there.
I was under the impression that the new drivers fixed this issue.
Are you using the vanilla kernel? or another patchset? |

Also I would check your xorg.conf and make sure you have the nvidia driver not the nv driver listed......

Just been through a similar thing. Works okay for me with 61.11 nvidia-kernel and nvidia-glx.
Run opengl-update nvidia
Make sure nothing else has broken as a result of moving to udev - mouse is a good candidate for this. Mine's got a habit of hanging when it can't find /dev/mouse.
I've heard of issues with some kernel versions and EHCI USB and nvidia. Don't know if this applies here.
Is NvAGP set in your xorg.conf? If it is, try another value. 1 and 3 may be good candidates.
Hope you can figure this out - I had to rebuild the machine to fix it, but I still think I could have got it if I'd done the right thing. |

maybe its that error crap with /dev/nvidiactl not being readable

thats all set, i'm using my same xorg.conf as before, so there is no change there.
when i ran lsmod nvidia was loaded (after remerging it for the newly compiled kernel of course), and the nvidia0 and nvidiactl devices were in /dev
how can i check what device my mouse needs to be on? right now its set to /dev/mouse.
for now i rolled back to a kernel that uses devfs cause i needed to get some work done for school, and as soon as i did that and remerged the nvidia drivers again, it worked fine (took some fiddling cause i forgot i modified /etc/conf.d/rc, but it works fine now). |

ok i fixed it.
turns out that there was a problem with the mouse as archangel said.
in my xorg.conf i just changed /dev/mouse to /dev/input/mouse0.
all is working now 
usb pen drive is fine and dandy as well using udev, rules, and supermount

| No problem - I've wondered about this behaviour, it almost sounds like a bug. I'm sure XFree used to bail and say "can't load core pointer" or some such - which would really be a lot friendlier. |

i have that problem, and i edited console.perms already, but the permissions keep resetting... help me... im fresh outta ideas (and i didnt compile xorg 6.8.0 w/ pam)
i can solve the problem by fixing permissions, but who wants to do that after every reboot!!

nevermind, i erased all dri lines in console.perms, and edited udev device permission...  |
