if i launch X via start X i get a server halt
it loads up X, i get some mouse action and then the mouse turns into a garbled block of mess and the server freezes.

if i launch X via gdm/kdm the X starts, and the first display freezes in the same way and gdm/kdm starts another session(ctrl+alt+f8) that seems to work fine.

any ideas?

this is an 855GM laptop, btw. i do have
Code:
Section "Extensions"
    Option "Composite" "Enable"
    Option "RENDER" "Enable"
EndSection

I don't run xcompmgr, i don't need the dropshadows or transparency and resizing windows is so slow using xcompmgr -a for no shadow.

ideas??

Since you dont need the transparency etc, you should not enable the Extensions section...

give that a go :)
