New user questions

Hello,

I have finally got my G5DP 2Ghz running a bootstrapped Gentoo install from the 2004.1 LiveCD (32 bit).

I have emerged a newer kernel - presume this is the latest available 2.6.7-gentoo-r14. I have some trouble with the frame-buffer working with my Radeon9800, and 23" cinema display although I just ripped the config from the LiveCD (from /proc/config.gz) and built the kernel against that and all is OK.

The GCC3.4 is on the box. Now:-
I have tried to emerge zorg-x11. It fails halfway through the compile with an error with tdfx_renderer.o, and seg faults.

THe question is. Am I doing the right thing (should I use Xfree)? Am I doing things in the wrong order ? Have I missed anything ?

Any help would be gratefully received. Thanks.

when I complete a new install I usually just type
emerge [wm of choice] && emerge naim && emerge everything else I want
