if you want to rip to xvid or svcd i recommend ripmake (i've been using it for some time). dvdrip is not bad, but i don't like it.

if you want to rip your dvd to a dvd-5, then use lxdvdrip

I'm a fan of quickrip myself. I found that dvd:rip is a pain if you need to rip subtitled stuff.

Best,

Alex

I like acidrip

I think k3b can do it too, if you want one program that will do everything when it comes to cds and dvds

You seem to have some experience. Care to elaborate? I am also looking for a way to rip dvds. Would like to add that I'd also like to see about converting these rips to mpeg4/divx?? (not sure of my terms yet) so that I can burn with my cd-rw.

Anyone else naming packages-- why is it your choice? What do you do with it?

ok, i try t oelaborate, even if i don;t know, what you expect to read...

ripmake can be found here. there are also some additional tools for copying dvd to harddisk or detecting the black borders, but i recommend dvdbackup for copying and mplayer for detecting the borders.
the rest is quite straight forward. just have a look at the help screen to get started.

What don't you like about dvdrip? What do you like about ripmake? How is the interface? Basically I'm looking for recommendations so that I don't have to compile everything just to choose one.

i really like about ripmake that it generates makefies. this way you can rip the dvd in several steps using the console and it can resume the ripping process depending on the already availabe files.
and once set up to your needs, it detects almost everything without user interaction.

i can't really remember what i dislike about dvd::rip. i think it's the fact that you have to do the whole ripping process from within a gui. and maybe i'm wrong, but i did never put too much effort in using dvd::rip, because i had a script that did what i want it to....
but there are so many people using dvd::rip, it's has to fit certain needs, just not mine.

vobcopy -m #creates a dvd mirro in your user directory
mkisofs -dvd-video -udf "filename" > "filename".iso #creates the iso image for burning
use dvdshrink through wine if you need less than 4.4gb ie shrink from dvd9 to 5
