why wait when v1.4_rc2 is said to be upgradable to v1.4_final?
Don't know when v1.4_final will be out though.. |

You might want to keep an eye on the GWN (Gentoo Weekly Newsletter, accessible from gentoo.org). The Dec 30th edition had some info. _________________ Quis separabit? Quo animo? |

I was under impression that the portage tree was now frozen until 1.4 is officially released (maybe that's r3 only) except security patches are still allowed. |

Umm, no. The portage tree is updated when an update is available, be it a normal update (0.7.5->0.7.6) or a security update. |

kanuslupus,
The earlier Weekly Newsletter mentions a January 14, 2003, release date. Clearly, that time's come and gone without new developments. Might you be aware of any more recent projections?

Is there something on the LiveCD 1.4_rc2 that do not work on your system?
If you already has Gentoo installed, there is no need to reinstall everything. The versions seen, i.e 1.4 etc, is only for the install CD. If you do emerge rsync && emerge -u world on a regular basis, your system is already up-to-date. No need to go through a complete new install just because the Install CD has been upgraded.

ebrostig,
Truth be known, ebrostig, my first attempt to get Gentoo installed about ten days ago ran aground because of my inexperience in configuring the kernel with menuconfig, something which since has been addressed. I'd planned another attempt, but when I learned that the release of the final version was imminent, I thought I'd wait for it.
Many thanks for your concern.
