Hi,
I have a Pocketek portable hard disk drive and a GoVideo PVP-4040. Both claim to support USB 2.0 mass storage mode. Both work with Knoppix in USB 1.1 mode. Both fail with Gentoo in USB 2.0 mode.

This is just a shot in the dark, but if I were you I'd compile the USB host controller drivers (UHCI, EHCI) as modules.
