Brand-new to Gentoo, a few years previous experience with SuSE. I've just installed the 2.6.7 kernel working off a Stage 3 install. I have to do a prebuilt install off a Packages CD for everything because I've got a softmodem that requires Linuxant's hsfmodem drivers, and until that's in place I can't connect to the Internet. I don't mind paying the $20 for a license.
The hsfmodem install for SuSE was easy, using the appropriate RPM. For Gentoo I must compile modules from a tar package, which I grabbed off the Web using my SuSe setup and then transferred to my Gentoo setup. In Gentoo the compile goes OK, but when I try to run hsfconfig, I get this message: "WARNING: /etc/runlevels not yet supported". Thereafter everything freezes to the extent that I have to pull the power plug.
hsfconfig is an executable so I can't look inside it. But I'm wondering if the error here reflects some failure on my part to complete the installation in regard to runlevels?! So far I have installed Xorg and KDE and can run both - not without some monitor problems (image is shifted a bit sideways compared to the same on SuSE), but I figure those are unrelated.
What further information should I provide to help in diagnosing? |

Try this:
-remove any installed files from that package
-do
Code: |
emerge -s hsf #to see what options you have
emerge hsflinmodem
or
emerge hsfpcimodem (I don't know exactly as I've never used these before)
|
then see if it gives the same error. _________________ 0100100100100000011011000110111101110110

I don't think that will work. I don't have those packages on the Package CD so there's no way I can install them. I'm not even sure they're still available for the 2.6 kernel I'm using. |

OOp, sorry.
I'll do some research now.
Would you like me to give you exactly the url to the file you have to d/l to be able to compile one of those pkgs?
OK,
You should get this file from another machine and then burn it on a cd or som'n
http://www.linuxant.com/drivers/hsf/full/archive/hsfmodem-
6.03.00lnxt04082400full/hsfmodem-6.03.00lnxt04082400full.tar.gz
and then just uninstall previous version, untar, make , make install
But still, why isn't this version in portage? Hmmmmm... _________________ 0100100100100000011011000110111101110110

I've already downloaded exactly that file and done the make install. Again, the problem isn't doing the make install - it's trying to do hsfconfig to do the initial installation. And I believe that without the initial installation I'm not going to be able to run "hsfconfig --license" later on to install a license that will get me up to full speed - prior to that you're limited to 14K or whatever.
Very frustrating. I may just buy a modem card and slap it in. |
