|
|
I'm currently running a system on RedHat 9 with this configuration:
The OS is installed on a single IDE harddrive, a storage area is setup on 4 SCSI drives using software RAID 5 as it comes with RedHat.
I would like to switch this system to Gentoo. Does someone know if this is possible by keeping the current RAID 5 array.
Thanks

Unless RedHat(e) did something evil and messed with the software raid stuff from the kernel, then you should be perfectly fine moving that over. Just make sure when you're building your kernel and setting up your Gentoo box that you get the raid-tools stuff installed and that you enable Multipule devices drivers support (RAID and LVM) -> RAID support.
It's pretty safe to just enable all of those options under that section.
If nothing else, test it out. Make a good backup of the main drive (I suggest g4u or Ghost for Unix), then install Gentoo over the main drive. If all goes well, then hold onto that image until your comfortable that everything else is safe then you can drop it. If all goes wrong, then you have an image you can restore from.

Thanks for this. Can I just take the existing raidtab file, put it in /etc, and call raidstart /dev/md0? |

I don't see why not. Just make a quick sanity check that all the device names haven't been changed around on you when you go from RH to Gentoo. |

The last time I used the RAID the comes with Red Hat, it indeed built the RAID support into the kernel. So, most likely that's how yours is set up. I decided to set up Gentoo on the same box. When I went to fdisk the drive(s) because I no longer wanted RAID, the array was still recognized. You'll probably be OK just making sure that RAID is built into the kernel when you build it and copying the raidtab. |
