i don't understand people crying for 2.8, you could have tested 2.8rc1 for weeks 8O

now sit down and wait for the last ebuild and the whole thing getting unmasked :)

arenaweb-

some don't care to completely bork their system with release candidates. I am one of these people(on my PRIME system anyway). id rather be a little behind the times and have my data not explode as if i'd strapped C4 to it.

you might consider waiting for the bugfix releases, 2.8.4 could be running smooth :D

Who is in charge of the GNOME 2.8 .ebuild making?
If you are out there, how many .ebuilds are left to make?
Will it take until tomorrow? Anyone?

I sure hope they don't waste their time reading the forums, but consentrate on making the ebuilds ;-).

Just have patience. I'd rather have a bug-free ebuild, than a quick'n'dirty one..

I don't believe anyone is "crying" about gnome 2.8. Everyone knows we could be running RCs but some of us don't think that it is a good tradeoff. I have in the past from BMG, but I had problems later with interwoven versions of BMG gnome and portage gnome.

I, like others, am highly anticipating the gnome 2.8 release, but I understand that Foser and company have lots of work to do. Hats off to the dev team.

Looking at the cvs logs it appears that they're just resolving dependencies now, so I'm guessing it'll be out by 2004-9-20...(Monday)

Big updates like this always take a bit of time to push out. They have to work out all the deps which is a real PITA.

Can't wait to see the changes in 2.8. Will evolution still be a seperate package though or will the 2.0 version just come in one of the gnome packages?

Most likely it simply takes a long time to do the testing.

build your own from the bmg 2.7.9s , just rename the ebuild fra 2.7.9, to 2.8, and also use the --pretend and modify all dependencies the same way(one would be wise to use the portage overlay)

also, download all the tarballz to distfiles and go for it.

it works, i have done it.

------------

for all you KDEers out their, if you have any interest in gnome2.8, download ubuntu linux, it's much faster that compiling gnome2.8 yourself and will give you a nive taste of it.

IF THEIR WERE ENOUGH PEOPLE who wanted this, i could just tarball up a full ubuntu install and post a torrent of it, but i would like to see at least 10 people interested b4 i did that.

No need to risk rsync ban.

If GNOME stops working, esp. Evolution, I think I would cry -- I run my life through there. Will wait for keymasking.

Although the upside for it working is great--tasks and appointments integrated through the time/calendar applet with evolution-data-server... so cool, so productive (heh, i wish i was productive).

AFAIK this was a very big release with lots of new packages and new things, so the dependencies have changed alot since 2.6, and this is why it is hardmasked, util the devs can make sure they are accounting for the dependencies.
