I need a WM that basically presents you with a completely black screen... no desktop menu, no panels, just GUI so I can load a program from .xinitrc and have just that one program running on a purely black screen... Is there a WM that will do that for me or I can configure it to? thanks.

That would work, except that the root background is that weird criss-crossy thing... it needs to be black...

Actually, there's another problem..., Ratpoison makes windows run either fullscreen or centered. I need to be able to reposition windows at whim... I'm trying to run beep-media-player in a fullscreen-like mode, but the window sizes need to be specific, and the windows need to be in specific places...

What about evilwm? It's a WM with a 1px border, and nothing else, and you can move and resize windows with Alt key combinations.

As for the black background, when I start X my root bg is black, but I don't know why (and I can't experiment because stopping X crash my gentoo, you can thank Ati for that). But you can also use programs like fbsetbg to set a black background.

Also, if you want precise setup of the size and position of the window and some cool non-eyecandy things, you can consider FVWM too (not as fast as the two WM above, but it's still very fast and it's very configurable)

Backround is achieved through something like xsetbg. Also, you could basically just run X without any WM at all and do what you're describing.

It's an option, but he wants to move the window at whim, so he needs a WM to do that.

You could call xsetroot in your .xinitrc to make the background solid black. You can also use TWM and edit your .twmrc to make you client windows completely tabless and borderless (you can still be able to move windows).

If you look at the following screenshot, it looks like there is no window manager running but twm is being used as a window manager.
