I think the integration of Evolution into the desktop (gnome-calendar) and improvements to nautilus are a great addition.. can't wait to try it out.... but i'll be waiting for the ebuild. errr, I guess that means i can wait ;)

have some patience, ebuilds are being put into portage (I noticed gconf 2.8.0 already showing up -hardmasked- during last emerge sync)

maybe we'll all be emerging gnome 2.8 tomorrow :)

There is always the oppurtunity to learn; it is important to have when you are using the work of volunteers. Gotta respect the devs, I'm sure they are working hard to make sure the transition goes smoothly. If you really want to try it out earlier, you could get it running outside of portage.

Or you could use the BMG ebuilds...

I think some 2.8 GNOME packages are already in portage. Someone else should please verify this.

You can check on the current progress here.

As JefPober said, the ones that are up now are all hard-masked.

At the time of this posting, I see: gconf, gnome-vfs, libbonobo, libbonoboui, libgnome, libgnomecanvas, libgnomeui, librsvg and gnome-volume-manager.

One thing I'm surprised about... It says on the Gnome site that Gnome 2.8 contains Evolution 2.0, which has no ebuilds yet, and according to Novell's site, still hasn't been released... Could that be a typo, or the affect of some sort of partnership?

mil0t,

bah..ffs.. BMG is for development ebuilds and all that jazz, so you could get gnome 2.7 from there..

Gnome 2.8 is a stable release and is being added to portage. Why not just wait a few days and save yourself the hassle..

I heard that Metacity 2.7.something had its own XComposite support for transparency and shadows, though its implementation was still a little slow.

Any details on this? How it is used and whether it is enabled by default?

I've been using jhbuild (basically it gentoo-izes the install process, only from CVS instead of releases), and its pretty nice. The new evolution crashes for me every other time I go to view my mail (literally), but it looks nice. A little more user friendly with adding applets, and remote volumes are more stable.

[edit]Oh, the mime-system no longer sucks as well. Forgot about that.[/edit]

In one sentance: Its nothing ground breaking, but its worth the upgrade.

Can you tell emerge to use downloaded source-files instead of downloading during emerge? If so, where to put them?

you can put them in /usr/portage/distfiles.
you don't need to tell emerge anything as long as they are the correct version for the ebuild.
