how about this.
do weekly snapshots of the entire portage tree.
when one emerge rsyncs(or better - emerge torrentsync) a bittorrent client would start and compare what is in the current portage torrent vs their system. new torrent programs have the ability to not download a part the archive, so you would be able to skip those files that have already been downloaded, then the entire portage tree would pretty much sit as an active torrent, with each mirror being a seed and each user being a client and a possible seed if willing.
of coarse this would distribute the load accross mirrors but also allow users to be seeds.
i would be a seed with the 'torrenrsync' running constantly on a low priority in the background. many of the forums followers would do this to help the community.
any ideas????

also, this would be usefull(more usefull??) for the source mirrors, for downloading the tarballs, and it would work in quite the same way. |
