my gdesklets mem monitor is reporting different usage than my system monitor. System monitor reports 218/502 used while the the desklet monitor reports 483/502. Im guessing the gnome system monitor is more accurate, but why the discrepancy?

It seems gdesklets reports the same usage top would do, this means it sees cached mem as memory in use. See this thread for more info
