here is the error i get:
/dev/dsp: No such file or directory

Maybe you could be a little more informative..
When do you get this error etc etc. Is it when you log in or log out,
Have you recently changed to udev?
Beyond this more info needed... |

1) Have you recently changed Kernel?
2) Have you as the previous poster asked just moved to udev?
3) can you run gnome/startx as root ?
4) does /dev/dsp exist ?
5) what are its permissions ?
6) are you in audio group ?
btw /dev/dsp is a sound device... _________________
