Timing buffered disk reads: 38 MB in 1.74 seconds = 21.89 MB/sec

think u shld take a look at configuring your harddisk parameter, Your harddisk performamce a bit slow.
Mine look something like this

Code:
 hdparm -Tt /dev/hda

/dev/hda:
 Timing buffer-cache reads:   1024 MB in  2.01 seconds = 510.04 MB/sec
 Timing buffered disk reads:  172 MB in  3.01 seconds =  57.23 MB/sec

just a question, what do these numbers mean? should they be high or low?

amps

The higher the better.

Hell-Razor

Tried editing "/etc/conf.d/hdparm"?

When your system reads information from the buffer-cache, do you want it to read lots and lots of bytes every second, or just a few bytes?

What version of Xorg are you using? I had similar problems with 6.8.0-r1. Starting apps took 100% cpu for 5-10 seconds even with small programs before they started. 6.7.0-r2 works fine.
