That certainly doesn't look right. What does
Code:
echo "My compiler is:"$CC; gcc --ver
return?

I am having the exact same problem. Another thread suggested a similar problem but a reply said their gcc-config profile was gone? I'm thinking that might be my problem here. Does anybody know how to fix that?

I fixed it by adjusting the gcc profile.
Code:
gcc-config -l

shows the profiles available. I selected 2 like this
Code:
gcc-config 2

Then do
Code:
source /etc/profile

Then, try to emerge groff.

hi,

just wanna add my thanks! I got the same error during emerge system (fresh install with "gcc34-x86-2004.2"-profile + nptl). Looks like somehow the profile gets reset/removed..
Now it's doing fine with the rest of 'emerge system'.;)

I got the no compiler error that the original poster had. I checked my gcc profile it was already set to what it was supposed to set to, but I'm still getting the no compiler error.

Any other ideas?

Trying to build a new stage1 64-bit system, I've come across exactly the same error (during bootstrap.sh):
Code:

Like you, gcc-config seems fine.
Code:
# gcc-config -l
[1] x86_64-pc-linux-gnu-3.4.2
[2] x86_64-pc-linux-gnu-3.4.2-hardened

[6] x86_64-pc-linux-gnu-3.4.3-hardenednopie
[7] x86_64-pc-linux-gnu-3.4.3-hardenednossp

I've even tried setting it to another value, doing an env-update; source /etc/profile; then setting it back and doing another env-update; source /etc/profile, all to no avail. I am likewise running an NPTL/udev system (and have been building them for months).

Did a new version of gcc get unmasked?

# echo $CC && gcc --ver

Is it just me, or has the AMD64 stage1 installation procedure been more unstable than a paranoid delusional crackwhore the last couple of months? As things stand, it is IMPOSSIBLE to build an AMD64 stage1 system from scratch. I'm reduced to taring existing, working builds across the network until whatever keeps getting broken every week or so is fixed (if it is fixed).

I cannot begin to express how irritating this is.

EDIT: Well, that was a little harsher than it needed to be (it came in a moment of extreme frustration), but I am concerned that these kind of build issues have been cropping up with AMD64 stage1 builds with increasing frequency. After more than a year of relative stability in terms of being able to build a 64-bit NPTL/udev/gcc-3.4.x system from a stage1 tarball (even outdated ones), the number of times running a successful bootstrap.sh or 'emerge system' from a stage1 has become impossible has increased alarmingly in recent weeks.

The groff error is relatively new, but other gcc errors have cropped up (eventually with various workarounds). I know things are in flux as the distro moves to NPTL and 2005.0, and I know we'll have some growing pains along the way, but I really wish workarounds for these sorts of hiccups would be widely published BEFORE changes that b0rk bootstrap.sh and 'emerge system' are committed. MHO from the peanut gallary, of course.

I't not just AMD64, it's also borking at a humble X86 stage 1 bootstrap.

I'm having the same problem. Simple x86 (Pentium IV) bootstrap. Changing the GCC Profile didn't fix it for me.

It turns out my problem was related to a bug in the GCC build I was using. I had recently upraded from GCC 3.4.3 to GCC 3.4.3-r1. A bug report has been filed about this issue and can be monitored at https://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=80412.

The solution was to downgrade back to GCC 3.4.3 and rebuild.

OKay... How do you downgrade? Emerge gcc 3.4.3?

What a relief!

From the bug report:
Code:

------- Additional Comment #3 From Jordan  2005-02-01 22:39 PST -------
# bah
sed -e 's/3\.4\.4/3.4.3/' -i ${S}/gcc/version.c

those two lines were in the gcc-3.4.3.20050110 ebuild however they are not in the gcc 3.4.3-r1 ebuild, thus, the version in version.c ends up getting set to 3.4.4. I've added the line back and am recompiling now. I am pretty sure this will fix the problem.

------- Additional Comment #4 From Jordan  2005-02-01 23:27 PST -------

I can now verify the above mentioned line fixes the problem for me.

Not sure why one would need the #bah comment :-)

If you want to downgrade to 3.4.3 instead, just do
Code:
emerge =gcc-3.4.3

The "=" prefix and the version suffix specify exactly which version of the package you want. This can be a handy trick if, for example, you'd like to have multiple versions of gcc installed (for example, on AMD64 I emerge a copy of 3.3.4-r1 in addition to 3.4.3 so I can compile a couple of troublesome packages that don't like gcc-3.4.x, namely celestia and mico).
