hfs plus / install cd / help?

Hey everyone. I'm in a bit of a dilemma - I have a laptop with one hd running os x (which currently won't boot) OS X won't boot because of a software problem, so I'm trying to use the gentoo 1.2 iso install cd to access the hfs plus partitoin (without installing gentoo over the data on the hd). I also run gentoo on my x86 box, but I can't seem to find out a way to get the data off the mac hd since hfsplusutils isn't included on the 1.2 install cd. I can't compile it - no gcc, cc, and I can't find a binary anywhere to dl... Does anyone have any suggestions? Perhaps hfsplusutils can be included in the 1.4 iso for ppc. Thanks.
