when i look at my system monitor i noticed that there is a process called xdm running as root,
in a subdirectory for that process is another one called "X"; also being run as root and it is eating up btwn 65%-85% of my cpu all the time. when i kill the pid i get the xdm loggin screen again...
does this knid of cpu usage sound right to anyone? _________________ AMD AthlonXP 2800+

I'm not sure why X and xdm are using so much cpu time.
xdm is the graphical login manager and X is the graphics system. Killing X will bring you back to login manager as you have found out.
What window manager are you using? What version of the nvidia drivers are you using? You may want to try the nv driver and see what happens.

ya u r right
i am using nvidia 1.0.6111
gnome window manager
and when ever i have any graphical app running (like glxgears or the system monitor, reasource monitor) is when X really puts a load on the cpu so when i run top it is much more acceptable <5%
initially i was using the reasource monitor and it is always high because it is a graphical window....kind of a catch 22 _________________ AMD AthlonXP 2800+
