Hi there,
I just installed gentoo and it's my first Linux distro so I'm a bit at sea here... Anyway, I installed gentoo and everything was peachy, lovely splash in the background, etc. First I emerged nvidia-kernel. After that I emerged xorg-x11 and got it working without too much trouble. Then I emerged kde and everything still seemed peachy. However, I just noticed that when I start up X the image on the monitor screen is smaller than what it should be. The image's left corner is about one inch up from the bottom of the screen and about an inch away from the left-hand side. The problem isn't the CRT's own settings because the gentoo command line background splash fills up the screen, as does Windows (I'm dual booting). I messed around a bit with the resolutions in xorg.conf but the problem persists.
While this problem isn't critical, it's bugging the hell out of me. Any ideas? Here's my xorg.conf for reference anyway. I've a 17" monitor and a Geforce4 MX420. Any help will be greatly appreciated!

The nv driver is the standard built-in driver for nvidia cards, the nvidia driver is the one from nvidia themselves. I'm pretty sure using the correct driver will fix this issue. |

It's the refresh rate.
Most monitors store separate settings for different refresh rates...sometimes refresh rates that are just on the edge of what your computer can handle can cause exactly that kind of distortion.
Make sure your HorizSync and VertRefresh are correct for your monitor, or manually change the settings through KDE or something. |

| I just fixed a problem like this by running xvidtune and hitting "left" twice, then test, it looked good so I hit apply. My problem was that i'm dual booting Gentoo w/ 2.6.x and Windows 2000. There would be a "gap" on one side of the screen. In linux, if I adjusted the monitor settings physically on the monitor OSD, when I booted Windows 2000 there would be a gap on the opposite side. This happened if I adjusted it when I was in Windows, then booted Linux again. |

| Yeah, I think that's a bug in the "nv" driver. Try using the "nvidia" driver instead. |
