Preface: It's late and I'm tired.

Anyways
There is a certain server out there I use that has a hugh long name. Millions of characters
a pain to type

So i was thinknig since I have a domain, I could just make a CNAME in my DNS file for my domain and give it a simple shorter alias on my domain

so like

origional

serverName.domain1.domain2.tld1.tld2

and I could just go and

serverName.MyDomain.tld

But that doesnt seem to be working in bind

I have it set up as a CNAME just like any other one I use

Whats wrong, is it some authority thing that I'm missing?

Among other things, yes.

Which of those two domains do you have authority for ?

You'd need both to be able to make that kind of link - which is not possible with an alias in any case.

Why not put the IP of the server in /etc/hosts and give it a short name... works great as long as it's not a namebased webserver.

Alex!!!

"doesn't seem to be working" - please elaborate... it should work.

Ok, I'm authoritative for mindstab.net, My domain, and I run it

The computer is a school computer i got an accoutn for

gambit.instruct.shcoolname.bc.ca

I added
gambit CNAME gambit.instruct.schoolname.bc.ca.
to my mindstab.net file for bind,
but when ever I tried to ping gambit.mindstab.net
I got
ping: unknown host gambit.mindstab.net
and when
dig gambit.mindstab.net
I jsut get a response back saying that mindstab.net is authoritative but no answer section

Run it how ?
Is your nameserver in the .ca zone as the primary for the domain?

Does this computer have a public IP at all ?

Zone file.
It's called a zone file.
That should give you a clue right there - you cannot cross zone boundaries in assigning names.

If the computer has a public IP - which it should, since it has a global DNS record - just use the IP, please.

Ping from where ?
Your LAN? The machine itself ?
From outside ?

Where does this dig ?
From a local host, or from the nameserver, to the nameserver, or to an external nameserver ?
