I had a little problem with my mplayer, mplayerplug-in and firefox installation...

I use the following versions:
Code:
net-www/mplayerplug-in-0.91
media-video/mplayer-1.0_pre4-r7 live network
media-plugins/live-2004.03.27

but i get allways 404 errors on each stream (i.e. apple.com/trailers)
Code:
Server returned 404: Not Found
Unable to open URL: http://movies.apple.com/movies/warner_independent/around_the_bend/around_the_bend_m240.mov.
MMX2 supported but disabled
3DNowExt supported but disabled
Server returned 404: Not Found
Unable to open URL: http://movies.apple.com/movies/warner_independent/around_the_bend/around_the_bend_m240.mov..

I tried also the masked version of mplayer and live - but same error message... any suggestions about this??

I have found that when updates are made to the streaming systems, older versions of the mplayerplug-in no longer work. This being the case, I have chosen to use the latest version of the mplayerplug-in because 0.91 no longer worked to stream content from sites like apple.com/trailers/

By default, it is masked. I unmasked it in my overlay directory (there are other ways to install masked software, but this is the method that I use) and then updated the software:
Code:
# etcat -v mplayerplug-in
[ Results for search key           : mplayerplug-in ]
[ Candidate applications found : 8 ]

 Only printing found installed programs.

*  net-www/mplayerplug-in :
        [   ] 0.91 (0)
        [M~ ] 0.95 (0)
        [M~ ] 1.0_pre2 (0)
        [M~ ] 1.0 (0)
        [M~ ] 1.2 (0)
        [M~ ] 2.11 (0)
        [M~ ] 2.60 (0)
        [  I] 2.66 (0) OVERLAY
#

This should work for you too.
