hey,
i am, and always have been logged on a root.
when trying to add a user, i get the error "PAM authentication failed".
any help would be much appreciated.

Well, i dunno what to say...someone other guy here on the forum got it fixed by re-emerging pam...i just emerge -u world and it fixed it all. maybe you should try this :
