I used to love playing gnome and kde games on this
hardware, but since I installed Gentoo, the black
backgrounds have swallowed all the detail, and things
like NetHack and Gnibbles are just plain unplayable.
Web pages with black backrounds are really bad too,
but they never were all that wonderful to start with.
I really miss my favorite games, though.
Even the buttons on the top of this Forums screen are
illegible until I highlight them to get reversed video.
Anybody have a clue where to start?
I'm running at 24 bits, 1280x1024 res, with or without
OpenGL drivers.

Sounds like you've got brightness and/or contrast messed up. You might want to try tweaking those (not sure if it's possible in software, but most monitors can). |

i'm a bit surprised to find I have both brightness and
contrast at maximum. Moreover, changing either one
makes the problem worse.
Most things are workable, but the black backgrounds
really overwhelm any content. Somebody elsewhere
suggested a "gamma correction", without knowing
how to tweak that on Gentoo. Anybody know about
that?
