During the kernel config step, I had a problem.

emerge gentoo-sources

i get an error message:

couldnt download linux-2.4.26.tar.bz2 Temporary failure in name resolution

When I first started the install however, eth0 was recognized.

I tried emerge vanilla-sources and got the same error.

Did you copy "/etc/resolv.conf" as mentioned in the handbook before chrooting? What does it look like on your system?
What does "ifconfig" say?
What does "ping -c 1 193.99.144.71" say?

It really might have just been a temporary DNS failure. Try again, let us know if it doesn't work. Please post the contents of
Code:
/sbin/ifconfig
when you do.

is this just a typo (linux-2.4.28.tar.bz2) or is this the actual name of your file?

I have been having DNS problems. Try commenting out random items in your /etc/resolv.conf file (#) and pinging yahoo ping -c 3 www.yahoo.com to see if it works.

oh okay, yes that is what I meant. I still feel like I'm missing a bit of information. Can you post some of the stuff above the part that says !!!!failure. The part that you have posted doesn't give a clear description of what could be happening.

It nearly seems like you don't have a working "tar" binary.
Firstly, make sure your net is running right. Dont forget to look at /etc/conf.d/net

tar:linux-2.4.28/docu.../.../ CANNOT OPEN DIRECTORY (points represent various filenames)
ARAGOSTRAGAZZO: my /etc/conf.d/net says:
iface eth0="192.168.0.2 broadcast 192.168.0.255 netmask 255.255.255.0
but i'm still online, everything works fine, why do i should have a network problem?

well one cool thing you can do when all that stuff shoots off the screen is the SHIFT+PAGE-UP or SHIFT+PAGE-DOWN. Comes in handy!

youre right! so system scolls down:
"tar: linux-2.4.28/documentation/usb/.../ CANNOT OPEN NO DIRECTORY"
after "usb" there are several other directories mentioned: such as readme... and there's
".../Documentation/ia86 CANNOT MKDIR. NO SUCH FILE OR DIRECTORY"
so to me this looks like a problem concerning directory-system maybe...

Try to re-emerge binutils.

Try to re-emerge binutils.

did so.
>>>emerge 1 fo 1: sys-devel/binutils-2.15.90.0.1patches--1.3.tar.bz2
>>>(md5 checking, ok)
>>>pids file write: no space left on device
>>>pids file wrote:illigal seek
so to me this didnt seem to work. and with more than 1gb on partition must be enough, mustnt?

you will need to free up some space. You can remove your files from /usr/tmp/portage directory to clean out bad builds etc. See if that helps you with the problem. Clean out tmp portage directory, then try to re-emerge binutils.

did so but didn't change, still "no space left on device". any other suggestions? thought that i maybe set my USE-flags too optimistically with full gnome and multimedia-support. my harddiskspace is about 1,3 gb...

this may be a little far reaching just yet. Can you touch a file?

touch testfile

see if it creates. Makes sure you haven't run out of inodes. Far reaching for now

This thread seems to have a similar problem to yours. Maybe can provide some insight?
