I have have had Gnome running fine up until about 30 minutes ago when first of all I couldn't open a mozilla firefox browser window. Everytime I clicked on the icon, nothing happened. No window appeared. I clicked a few times and after realizing it wasn't gonna work, I logged out and was presented with the login screen for Gnome.

I entered my username and password, the screen wen t black as though it was loading the desktop, but instead it returns me to the login screen. It continues to do this evertime I try and login.

I was attempting to install GTK when this all happened. Could it have anything to do with that?

I don't use gnome but I am assuming that it saves what you had open and the re-opens it when you log back in. You could try deleting the contents of the file that do that.

I am not sure where I would do that.

Is there anywhere that I can look for specific error logging to help me discover what is going wrong here?

the Xorg log is located at /var/log/Xorg.0.log so cat /var/log/Xorg.0.log would show you the output with errors and cat /var/log/Xorg.0.log | less makes it so you can scroll.

cat /etc/var/log/Xorg.0.log | less

Also, disable GDM? Just edit rc.conf and comment out the "DISPLAYMANAGER=" line.

Then login in the normal CLI and `startx'.

I have solved the problem.

I just did an emerge on some fonts and now Gnome loads up fine.

I must have unmerged those fonts when unmerging a previous install of GTK+

Thats all I can guess..

ooops....
