I've done so much searching that I've gotten myself REALLY confused and I need a sherpa to help find my way out. Can someone point me to a howto that will describe *from scratch and in detail* what I need to do to get the following working:

Thinkpad 600
Gentoo 2.4.26 kernel (from 2004.2 live)
PCMCIA Linksys WPC11 (Not v4)

I can get it working if I turn off WEP but obviously I can't (don't want to) do that. I've tried compiling just about every pcmcia and wireless module/option. Installed linux-wireless-ng.

Help! Please! (and TIA)

If you can get it working without WEP then I doubt it is a problem with the NIC or PCMCIA

(mine works flawlessly netgear WG511)

Have you looked at Uberlords wireless thread?
https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic.php?t=122435&highlight=wireless+setup+gentoo

I followed his instructions and it worked...
even lets me set different keys for different SSID's

My stuff doesn't work with linux-wlan-ng yet - nor will it unless the linux-wlan-ng devs support the wireless-tools extensions.

So either don't use my stuff or use another driver if possible

Thanks for the prompt responses guys.

Unfortunately I think I need some very remedial instruction. One thing I'm confused about is all the packages and modules related to wireless and pcmcia.....

Kernal PCMCIA and WiFi modules
pcmcia_cs
linux-wlan-ng
wireless-tools (which my portage doesn't seem to know about)
iwconfig (which I don't seem to have)
an array of configuration scripts

Which is these are required and which are reduntant or conflicting? In other words...what's the minimum I need to install and configure to get the WPC11 working with WEP and kernel 2.4?

Thanks again.

Do not despair, Pengwin! :P

Go buy a copy of "Linux Unwired" (O'Reilly Associates, Roger Weeks, Edd Dumbill, Brian Jepson). This book is an absolutely indespensible introduction and refernce volume for anyone who wants to connect their Linux machine to a wireless network.

Read my previous posting "Required Reading for WLAN Users/Administrators".
