I'm in the process of creating a server to which mac users can backup their artwork, lots of which the filenames contain characters such as / and \ in them.

Does anyone know how to get Samba 3 to accept these files?

Some of the artwork belongs to other companies (meaning we cannot change filenames), is there any way around this?

I have been told it was possible with Samba 3 and UTF8.

I've just gotten it working with Netatalk, but with a few caveats... Like the OS 10 machines can see the machine but when trying to access it report that they think the share is on the machine it's trying to access from.

The OS 9 machines work flawlessly with Netatalk, I simply add it via chooser creating a directory with \ and / in and it works flawlessly.

For example I just created a directory called "test / sedrs \ sfg" and it worked fine. According to ls the actual filename in linux is "test :2f sedrs \ sfg".

I'm still wanting to get it working with Samba 3 though...
